Dynamics of Japanese martial arts -- Synchronization and desynchronization of two people's postural sway --

(in English) When one person is in touch with another one, he obtains postural information of the two persons through somatosensory signals sensed at the contact point, and utilizes such information for posture control. The authors hypothesized that such haptic/somatosensory communication must play an essential role in martial arts. In this study, the authors analyzed the temporal profiles of the COPs (center of pressures) of two persons performing a practice move for martial arts. It was found that the two persons’ COP became more correlated when one held the other’s arm, but that this correlation was dissolved when one took a specific standing posture of martial arts with maintaining physical contact. This suggests that dissolution of mutual dependency of postural control may be an important key to the successful execution of martial arts techniques.
