Social influence on preference formation -- Choice of others induces preference change --

(in English) Evaluative judgment is known to be influenced by other person’s behaviors and attitudes. People tend to conform to other person’s behaviors without intention. In this study, we examined whether choice of three other persons induces preference change for abstract paintings. Participants were asked to observe choices of others between two abstract paintings and rate the paintings. After observing choice of others, chosen paintings were more preferred than unchosen ones. The preference change was present even when participants did not remember whether others chose the painting or not. Our results indicate that social influence on preference formation does not always require explicit memory for other person’s behaviors and attitudes.
