[Invited Lecture] TV white space wireless communications for Vehicle-to-Vehicle links

(in English) Vehicular communications have the potential to enhance the driving experience, especially with respect to increasing driver awareness and situation perception to ensure overall traffic safety. Recently, 10 MHz of spectrum centered at 760 MHz band has been allocated for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in Japan. On the other hand, several domestic and overseas carmakers have accelerated research and development of autonomous vehicles in parallel to the rising interest from the society. With the potential deployment of autonomous vehicles, currently allocated spectrum in the 760MHz band will immediately become insufficient due to the significant increase in the accompanying spectrum and capacity requirements. One solution for accommodating this demand is to look for spectral resources elsewhere including the spatially and temporally unused portions of the TV band (a.k.a. TV white space).
In this report, we first overview the current status of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, followed by a brief description of using TV white space for V2V communications. In a dynamic vehicular environment, the biggest challenge is to make vehicles aware of the white space around them in order to opportunistically utilize unused spectrum. Two mainstream approaches for spectrum awareness are incumbent user signal sensing and geolocation database lookup. We present field demonstrations employing these two approaches as well as channel switching functions. This work is partially supported by the “FY2012 Revised Budget for Research and Development into Expanding Radio Wave Resources” of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
