A novel system architecture utilizing effects of fiber chromatic dispersion for beam forming of RF phased array antennas is reported. A reflective semiconductor optical amplifier solution for uplink signal transmission from user terminals to the central office is proposed, and remote estimation of the arrival angle of the RF uplink signals is demonstrated by free space propagation experiments. A multi-core fiber solution, which can eliminate optical devices required in conventional systems such as wavelength division multiplexing couplers and variable optical delay lines, is also proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simplification of the downlink architecture. |
