Perception of stop consonants at the beginning of binaurally fused words

(in English) Stop consonants are perceived as voiced when their voice onset times (VOT) are relatively short, and they are perceived as voiceless when their VOTs are longer than a certain length (identification boundary). We investigated whether the identification boundary between voiced and voiceless stop consonants would change under binaural fusion listening in which they were presented to one ear and the following vowels to the other ear. We conducted two experiments using speech sounds which systematically varied in VOT duration. The results showed the identification boundary was significantly longer for the binaural fusion listening than for monaural listening. However, the difference between them may not have been attributable to binaural fusion listening per se because the boundary for the binaural fusion listening was similar to that obtained when we presented only consonants.
