Deriving the Salience Level of a Target Sound using a Tapping Technique Method

(in English) Auditory saliency is an essential attribute of a sound associated with the degree to which the sound captures attention. However, method for quantifying the degree of salience attribute is unestablished. This paper aims to develop a method for quantifying auditory saliency independent of the choice of the stimulus set. We have proposed a tapping technique method for this aim. The stimulus in the tapping technique was a sequence of isochronously alternating reference and target sounds. Participant's task was to tap with a button press on beat synchronously with the more salient sound of the two. The level of reference sound at which the reference and the target sound were tapped at the same rate was measured by which the reference sound was changed. The level was defined as the salience level. Obtained salience levels varied among target sounds. Additionally, the salience level obtained by the tapping technique method reflects the subjective salience of target sounds. These results suggest that the tapping technique method is effective for quantifying auditory saliency.
