Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Stability of the glenohumeral joint of human beings is known to be achieved partly by the activities of the shoulder muscles. Their coordinative activities, however, have yet to be clarified. Then, computer simulations have been applied to the estimation of the muscle forces, due to the difficulty of electro-myographic analysis. Our musculoskeletal model of the shoulder consists of three different components as follows: 1) bone models; 2) muscle models; and 3) a movement model of the abduction. Because our previous muscle model is represented as line segments connecting the origin to the insertion, some of the segments have a problem of penetrating the bone models. In order to solve this problem, we improved our model into that in which the humerus model is simplified as a combination of a sphere and a cylinder, and the muscle models run along the surface of the bone models when the two models come into contact with each other. Additionally, the model of the infraspinatus, one of the shoulder muscles, was also improved into one more life-like in anatomy. Results of computer simulations demonstrated that 1) the effects of the positional change of the insertion on the muscle activities were slight; and 2) the posterior portion of the infraspinatus was activated even in the late phase of the abduction, affecting the generation of the abduction torque throughout the motion.
