In cancellous bone, longitudinal wave often separates into fast wave and slow wave. The fast wave propagates mainly along trabeculae, and the slow wave propagates in bone marrow. These waveforms reflect structure and bone density of cancellous bone, then, the investigation of these waves can give us information of bone density and elasticities. However the in vivo cancellous bone is covered with the cortical bone, where circumferential wave possibly propagates. In this study, we focused on the influence of the circumferential wave to the two wave phenomenon. Making use of the CT images of in vivo adult male human radius, we fabricated the human radius model using bovine bone. With this model, we experimentally studied the effects of circumferential wave on the two wave phenomenon. The influence of the circumferential wave depended on the experimental layout of the transmitter, receiver and the human radius model. However, under the in vivo measurement conditions, the influences seemed small. |
