Evaluation of Reception Properties of ESPAR Antenna with Periodically Variable Directivity

(in English) In this study, we made prototypes of ESPAR (Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiator) antennas whose directivity can periodically change and measured characteristics of the antennas. The antenna pattern of the
antennas can be time-variable according to the incurred voltage of dc and sinusoidal waveform to the variable reactance which is connected to the parasitic element of the antennas. The periodically variable directivity can make the received signal components frequency-shifted according to the frequency of the sinusoidal waveform. The multiple received signals in different frequencies can be utilized as diversity branches to obtain diversity gain. According to the experimental results we can see that the antenna can provide time-variable antenna patterns with different phase to the received signals from opposite directions. Besides, we could increase the power of frequency-shifted components by increasing the antenna pattern variation. As a conclusion, the prototypes can contribute to realize the diversity of combined antenna pattern and path and to improve the diversity gain.
