Cell voltage equalizers are a necessary component for series-connected energy storage cells, such as lithium-ion batteries and electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). We have proposed a two-switch cell voltage equalizer using series-resonant voltage multiplier (SRVM). This equalizer can operate not only independently but also in concert with a PWM converter if the SRVM and converter are integrated into one unit by sharing some components. In this paper, consideration of suitable operation mode for the integration is performed, and a frequency-multiplied SRVM operating in discontinuous conduction mode is proposed based on the outcome of the consideration. Detailed operation analyses are separately performed for series-resonant circuit and voltage equalizer. Experimental results of equalization tests performed for eight EDLCs connected in series are also presented. |
