Implantable devices (IMDs) have been continually anticipated as a future tool for in-body wireless communication because of their potential to replace cable connectivity with biological telemetry monitoring. However, the antenna performance is attenuated by surrounding human tissues and power conservation is critical to long-term continuous monitoring of implants owing to the miniaturization of implantable devices. In this report, the proposed antenna is designed to operate in one of ultra-high frequency bands (UHF, 0.92 GHz) and Industry-Science-Medical bands (ISM, 2.4 GHz), because dual-band operation has potential to allow the implants to switch between dormant the wake-up modes to conserve energy and extend the lifetime of implants. In addition, the proposed antenna is assumed to be integrated into IMDs consisting of some electronic components (such as a battery and circuit) and a biological coating, a shielding box is introduced to reduce the mutual influence between the antenna and the electronic component. For numerical analysis, simple human arm model is used to represent a part of human arm to evaluate the antenna performance of reflection coefficient, current distribution, radiation pattern, and radiation efficiency by use of finite element method (FEM). |
