Electronic pacemakers play an important role in the treatment of bradyarrhythmia. Recently, different strategies to initiate pacemaker activity by genetic modification of ionic currents across the cell membrane were developed. These new approaches are called biological pacemaker engineering. Recent studies on the creation of the biological pacemaker using mathematical cell models have revealed the mechanism of induction of pacemaker activity. However, these studies have used the models of a guinea pig ventricular myocyte. In this paper, we use the reduced Ten Tusscher-Noble-Noble-Panfilov model of human ventricular myocytes. We analyze the bifurcation structure of the model by varying conductances of ion channels, and examine the method to initiate pacemaking. We also consider the effects of various ionic currents on the pacemaker activity. |
