The growth plate is a planar cartilage located in the epiphysis, having a function of growing bone. Then its damage results in the abnormal growth of the bone, motivating us to carry out its anatomical and histological studies. Its morphological models, however, has been represented as a simple open-surface by neglecting its 3-dimansional features, because the boundary between the bone and the plate is unclear in MR images. Then this study aimed at a quantitative valuation of the thickness of the plate. In MR images, the image density of the plate changes gradually from the epiphysis to the diaphysis. Then we fitted an exponential curve, $f(x)=be^{-ax}$, to such gradual change of the density, where parameter a can be interpreted as an evaluation of its thickness. Experiments using six healthy knees demonstrated that the plate tends to be thick and thin in its central and peripheral portions, respectively. |
