Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This article explores the harm caused by the misuses of the “digital person,” which is the aggregated personal data from various databases, such as the distortion of personal identity, and their threat to data subject’s social participation by using van den Hoven’s argument for the protection of moral identity and by using Goffman’s dramaturgy theory. I argue that one must have the right to control her/his “digital person”. However, this right would conflict with the freedom of expression, the freedom of speech, and the freedom of press and the social benefits derived from the reception and distribution of information. Therefore, we must establish general principles to balance between these personal rights and the social benefits.
