Real-time vital data monitoring system for driver’s health condition attracts much attention in intelligent transportation system. In this study, an impulse radio (IR) based human body communication (HBC) transceiver was developed with electrocardiogram (ECG) sensing function. Common electrodes were realized for both HBC transmission and ECG sensing by capacitive coupling, and a bit error rate (BER) smaller than 10^{-3} was achieved in physical layer. The HBC-transmitted ECG signals were compared with that from a commercially available ECG sensor, and good agreements were confirmed between them. These results demonstrated the usefulness of the developed system for health monitoring of drivers. |
