Multi-layer terahertz frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) composed of a square patch and a cross dipole are analyzed using the finite-difference time-domain method with the periodic boundary condition. First, we evaluate the frequency characteristics of a patch-dipole-patch (PDP) type FSS, paying attention to the effect of the metal dispersion and the loss tangent of a dielectric substrate (polyethylene). Consideration is next given to widening the transmission bandwidth of the PDP-type FSS. It is shown that an appropriate choice of the element lengths leads to a high transmittance over a 100% bandwidth. Furthermore, we investigate a double-layer square patch and a single element of the cross dipole to understand why the bandpass characteristics are obtained for the PDP-type FSS. Finally, a dipole-patch-dipole (DPD) type FSS is analyzed, in which each element of the PDP-type FSS is replaced with its counterpart. Two transmission peaks of the DPD-type FSS can be tuned by the choice of the element lengths. |
