Antenna de-embedding is to extract antennas from both ends of a MIMO system and to study the propagation channel only. Antenna-Channel Recombination is to recombine the de-embedded channel with other antennas at both ends. Through antenna de-embedding and antenna-channel recombination, the performances of different antennas in certain propagation environment can be evaluated. A MIMO channel can be described in either plane wave domain or spherical wave domain. Plane wave channel model is difficult for antenna-channel separation, since diffuse scattering requires infinite resolution of plane waves but practically only best fitted discrete paths are feasible. Alternatively, spherical wave channel model is possible for antenna-channel separation, because physically any radiated field can be expanded into a weighted sum of spherical harmonics with finite number of modes, including the field corresponding to diffuse scattering. This paper will study the feasibility of antenna de-embedding and antenna-channel recombination in spherical wave domain. Since spherical wave channel model is sensitive to array
configurations and the number of modes, the criteria of appropriate array configurations and appropriate number of modes for antenna de-embedding and antenna-channel recombination will be discussed accordingly. |
