Joint Frequency-Domain Equalization and De-spreading Based on Belief Propagation for Multi-Code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Transmission

(in English) Multi-code direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) transmission suffers from residual inter-code interference (ICI) after frequency-domain equalization (FDE) and de-spreading. Joint FDE and de-spreading based on maximum likelihood block signal detection using QR decomposition and M algorithm (QRM-MLBD) is an effective method to solve this problem. However, the computational complexity of QRM-MLBD is much higher than that of FDE and de-spreading because large number of surviving paths is required for M algorithm. Furthermore, when using QRM-MLBD, log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) of some bits cannot be exactly calculated because the candidate sequences having large cumulative path metric are removed at each stage. Therefore, error correction performance of channel decoding is severely degraded.
In this paper, we study joint FDE and de-spreading based on belief propagation (BP) for multi-code DSSS transmission to reduce the computational complexity and to improve coded BER performance. We evaluate, by computer simulation, the BER performance in turbo-coded multi-code DSSS transmission with joint FDE and de-spreading based on BP and show that BP can achieve the same BER performance as QRM-MLBD with 6 times lower computational complexity in uncoded case and that BP can achieve the BER performance superior to QRM-MLBD in turbo coded case.
