This paper gives an overview of “The Edokko No.1 Project”, the industry-academia-government-bank partnership developing deep-sea exploration vehicles. It has been developing free-fall-type deep-sea exploration vehicles using anti-pressure glass sphere vessels since 2011, which costs much lower than existing typical research-use vehicles using titan for vessels and using wires for falling and floating. In November of 2013, it was successful in recording 3D video of deep sea creatures at 7800m of the depth. The paper presents some of key component technologies of Edokko No.1: anti-pressure glass sphere vessels, camera and lighting control, wireless communication system under the sea using rubbers, and location informing system using satellite communication. Further, we outline the future direction of developing free-fall-type vehicles designed for a variety of applications. |
