An ad hoc network is characterized as a self-organized multi-hop wireless network. It does not rely on any pre-existing network infrastructures. Instead of this, each node can participate in the routing of packets to other nodes. However, each node in ad hoc networks is typically powered by batteries with a limited energy supply, and it is difficult to replace or to recharge them. Thus, it is crucial to consider how to conserve energy to maximize the network lifetime as an issue in the design of routing protocols. In conventional routing protocols, however, shortest-route algorithms are commonly used. Without considering energy consumption, nodes that are overused would drain their energy and the whole network would become partitioned. As concerns this problem, many battery-aware routing protocols have been proposed from a variety of perspectives. In this paper, we propose a novel enhanced max-min residual battery-aware routing protocol called EMAODV. It is expected to prolong the network lifetime by selecting an optimal route based on the battery conditions of the whole network. By EMAODV, the routes with insufficient battery energy are always avoided. If all the nodes in ad hoc networks have sufficient battery energy, a shortest route is selected. From the results of the performance evaluation, EMAODV shows a better performance in terms of prolonging the network lifetime. |
