On Improvement of Tensor Spectral Method for Estimation of Mixed Membership Stochastic Block Model

(in English) Maximum likelihood estimation is a common approach to estimating mixed membership stochastic block models; however, it is known that it suffers from its high computational.Recently, Anandkumar et al. proposed a tensor spectral method for mixed membership stochastic block models, and their method is attracting considerable attentions due to its computational efficiency and theoretical guarantees. However, one of the serious drawbacks is that their tensor spectral method assumes that the connection probability matrix is non-singular, which does not always hold in practice. In this paper, we propose a modification of their method so that it is applicable to singular connection probability matrices. In addition, we make another modification to fully utilize available information, and confirmed their effectiveness.We also propose other improvement and compare with a method which Anandkumar et al proposed.
