A Study of Content Prefetch Method in Millimeter Wave Access Network

(in English) Offloading 3G/LTE mobile traffic onto other networks such as Wi-Fi is a major challenge that mobile carriers face. Mobile traffic offloading onto 2.4 GHz band is widely practiced, but currently the lack of spectrum resources has become a serious problem. To solve this problem, 60 GHz millimeter wave band has a great attention since it requires no license and can provide wireless data transfer at more than 1 Gbps. However, it can cover only a few meters. The authors proposed a millimeter wave access network which delivers the prefetched content to a client using a millimeter wave. This network uses Content-Centric Networking (CCN) to aggregate the millimeter wave spot and the mobile network seamlessly. The realization of this network requires the prediction of a client’s movement and placement of content on a gate before the client arrives at the gate. This paper formulates a condition for the success of content preparation and evaluates it using the measured value of a prototype of the millimeter wave device. The evaluation result shows that how far this network needs form the gate to the client to prepare content. Moreover, this paper evaluates the relationship between the data size of millimeter wave communication and the performance of offload.
