In this study, we focus on the molecular orientation of the conjugated polymer and investigate the electrical and optical properties of the organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) using the polarized light emission and anisotropy of carrier transport. Top-gate type OLETs based on the oriented thin film of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (F8) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as gate dielectric are fabricated. When a current flows in a direction parallel to the oriented polymer main chain, the behaviors of characteristics of OLETs are markedly different from those in a direction perpendicular to the oriented one. Calculating the mobilities of electrons and holes from the transfer characteristics of the single layer device, the electron and hole mobilities of OLETs in which the oriented main chain is parallel to the channel length direction are approximately 4 and 8 times as large as those perpendicular (⊥) to that direction. Their polarized emissions are predominant along the oriented direction. Electron and hole mobilities of the bilayers devices are dependent on the orientation of the upper layer on which the gate dielectric is formed. External quantum efficiency and threshold voltage are independent on orientation of the organic layer. |
