It has been known that the entropy of HH- and VV-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is almost equivalent to that derived from quad-polarization data, and that it improves the accuracy of detecting underwater marine cultivation nets. The principle is based on small entropy values of surface scattering from the open sea surface and large values from the dominant random system noise due to little backscatter from the smooth surface above underwater cultivation nets. The same principle can be applied to ship detection, since the entropy is large for multiple scattering from ships against small entropy of the background sea surface. Further, the HH- and VV-polarization images of ships are not correlated because of multiple scattering, yielding little coherence; while those of the sea surface are well correlated. This property can also be used to enhance the ability of ship detection. The present paper examines the ship detection accuracy by comparing the dual-polarization amplitude images, entropy, coherence, and the combinations of entropy and coherence, using TerraSAR-X and Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) - Phased-Array L-band SAR (PALSAR) images over the Tokyo Bay, Japan. |
