Power amplifiers for wireless communication systems demand high power efficiency and linearity. Of the available types of high-efficiency switching-mode power amplifiers, envelope pulse-width modulation (EPWM) transmitter is advantageous because of their high power efficiency and linearity. In recent years, EPWM transmitter is studied for applying to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) widely adopted in wireless communication systems. However, few error vector magnitude (EVM) evaluation with power amplifiers has been reported. This paper shows that the EVM performance of a class-D amplifier is superior to that of a class-E amplifier in a polar-modulation EPWM transmitter for OFDM transmission by computer simulation. In addition, power-added efficiency (PAE) and output power of the two amplifier classes are compared. The calculated EVM is more than 31 dB from 1 to 2.5 GHz with the class-D amplifier. In addition, to evaluate the characteristics of the transmitter and power amplifier when changing the sampling rate of the ΔΣ modulator. |
