This paper presents a quadrature-modulation (QM) envelope-pulse-width-modulation (EPWM) transmitter with delta-sigma tri-level modulators to generate a bi-level EPWM signal for representing the off state between burst signals. This bi-level transmitter is suitable for directly connecting to a single-ended antenna and advantageous in small size and high power efficiency due to the omission of a transformer used in the conventional tri-level transmitters with two power amplifiers (PAs) in H-bridge configuration. Although simulation including digital signal processing with the QM EPWM and microwave circuit simulation with the power amplifier using n-MOSFETs shows that the error vector magnitude (EVM) of the proposed transmitter is slightly worse than the conventional transmitter, the proposed transmitter shows substantially good EVM performance. |
