[Invited Talk] Control of Organic/Inorganic Interface by Self-Assembled Monolayer having Reactive Terminal Group

(in English) Interface between inorganic substrate and organic layer involves essential problems due to inconsistency in physical and chemical nature of organic and inorganic materials. This paper reviews our strategy of solving this problem by formig chemical bonds at the interface via a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) that has reactive terminal group. Surface-tethered polypeptide film can be obtained by depositing aminoacid N-carboxy anhydride on amino-terminated SAM. SAMs having azo or benzophenone terminals are utilized to grown variety of vinyl polymers. It is also possible to tether a spin-coated polymer to an inorganic substrate via a reactive SAM. These methods produce polymer thin films that are tightly anchored to the inorganic substrates. It was observed that this method can lead to a marked improvement in adhesion strength of the organic layer, microstructure, and charge injection from the inorganic electrode to the organic layer.
