Areal density improvement of hard-disk drives is achieved mostly by increasing track density, especially with shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology. With increased track density, it had been observed that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exhibits greater fluctuation. This presentation describes a scheme that interleaves multiple data sectors to form a larger sector to combat the SNR fluctuation. The scheme is evaluated on an SMR drive to measure areal density gain over conventional sector format. |
