[Invited Lecture] Efficient Transmission Scheme for C-RAN Fronthaul link

(in English) Due to a rise of both smartphones and tablets, mobile data traffic has been increasing rapidly. It is required to pioneer higher radio frequency and/or to reduce cell coverage per base station and deploy a large number of base stations per area so as to increase cellular system capacity per area to accommodate increasing mobile traffic demands. When higher frequency is used, cell coverage decreases. Not only small cells but also macro cells are essential to provide seamless radio communication. Then, heterogeneous networks, which small cells are unevenly distributed in a macro cell are required. First of all, a centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architecture is introduced with MiWEBA project (“Millimetre-Wave Evolution for Backhaul and Access”), in which millimeter-wave ultra-broadband base stations are introduced and embedded into the cellular eco-system. Then, some issues to realize C-RAN fronthaul links are discussed. Finally, a proposed data compression scheme is introduced as an example to solve them.
