Flexibility of On-Board RL Snubber for PDN Resonance Damping in terms of Mount Location

(in English) RL snubber had been proposed as a method to damp LC resonances in a power distribution network (PDN) for digital integrated circuits (ICs). In this study, the RL snubber was investigated whether the effect of PDN resonance damping depends on its location in the printed circuit board. RL snubber was implemented at two locations; near and distant from the digital IC mounted on the test board as the noise source. For each of the two locations, the RL snubber was optimized in terms of resistance and inductance to provide maximum reduction of resonant current. The effect of PDN resonance damping was observed in terms of RF power current by both measurement and simulation. Results confirmed that the RL snubbers reduced the resonant power current significantly for both near and distant locations. On board RL snubbers, therefore, reduce the resonant current independently of their locations in the PDN. This means that the RL snubber involves a flexibility of implementation location on a printed circuit board. On board RL snubbers, thus, can be placed at any locations in flexibly response to other restrictions to your design.
