Traffic Classification on Mobile Network Considering Various Types of Network Traffic Flow

(in English) The amount of mobile traffic data has been increasing in the recent years since the smartphones have become widely used and the multimedia contents have become rich. For the mobile core network design, it is better for the network designer to consider the characteristics of the smartphone traffic. The smartphone traffic is categorized into foreground (FG) traffic and background (BG) traffic in terms that the traffic is triggered by human interaction and these types of traffic have different effect on users in the case of network congestion. However, it is difficult for the network designer to understand the characteristics since both of traffic occur complicatedly. In this paper, we propose a traffic classification method at the mobile core network. The proposed method, first, captures packets at the mobile core network. Then, the proposed method labels each TCP flow as BG traffic by using a machine learning method with metrics in the TCP/IP layer. Through the procedures, we model the common characteristics of BG traffic. The proposed method is evaluated by experiments using experimental data through the Wi-Fi connection and its effectiveness is described in terms of the accuracy.
