[Tutorial Lecture] Performance Evaluation of Communication Networks

(in English) This introductory lecture explains the fundamentals of performance
evaluation of communication systems to young researchers such as
undergraduate students and graduate students. Majority of
networking research is more or less related with performance
evaluation of network protocols, network systems, and network
services. For instance, if one is willing to propose a new solution
--- network algorithm, network protocol, network device, network
software, and network service --- for some problem, it is generally
required to prove its effectiveness through mathematical analysis,
simulation, or experiment. If one has basic skills on programming
and/or computers, it is not difficult to start simulation and/or
experiment, but a common pitfall in many cases is that conclusion
drawn from such performance evaluation is {em wrong} due to several
mistakes. Performance evaluation is easy to start, but not to do it
right. This lecture covers basics of performance evaluation based
on Jain's book, R. Jain, ``The Art of Computer Systems Performance
Analysis --- Techniques for Experimental Design, Measurement,
Simulation, and Modeling,'' John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1991.
