Discrimination experience of similar objects at the same viewing angles develops viewing angle tolerance in the neurons in the anterior part of inferotemporal cortex, area TE. TE is the final stage of the ventral visual stream which is thought to be critical for object recognition and discrimination. To understand the underlying neuronal mechanism for such tolerance in TE, we recorded the neuronal activities of cells in area TEO, from which TE receives its main projection. As population, TE neurons showed preference to object category regardless the change in viewing angle, after the experience discriminating similar objects at the same viewing angles. However, the population of TEO neurons responded more selectively to two-dimensional features than the object category. These results suggest the viewing angle tolerance represented in TE is established after the processing stage of TEO. |
