Experimental analyses on linear response characteristics of mouse retinal ganglion cells

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The vertebrate retina processes visual information contained in the outside world image by the multi-channel parallel neural circuits, and send it to the brain through axons of the ganglion cells. In recent years, it was suggested that the retinas are capable of some higher-order computations, such as extraction and anticipation of the object motion. However it is still unknown how and of what the retina encodes information in the natural visual environments. In the present, as a first step for addressing such an issue, we examined the response subtypes of mouse retinal ganglion cells. By using the multi-electrode array, we made recordings of spike trains from multiple cell units responding to either a step-wise change or random flickering of a diffuse light. Based on the differences in the step responses and linear temporal filters calculated by the spike-triggered reverse correlation, we classified them into several types.
