Fiber Macrobending Radius Estimation Method by Two-Wavelength Unidirectional OTDR Measurement

(in English) Macrobending of optical fibers might affect the transmission system performance if the induced loss becomes large. So, it is important to detect the occurrence of macrobending at an early stage from a viewpoint of preventive maintenance. We have already proposed a fiber macrobending detection method using a macrobending indicator. The method was standardized in ITU-T, and we have been using the method in cable maintenance work. A macrobending indicator is useful. However, that is dependent on two wavelengths used for measurement, and we have to take care of these wavelengths to evaluate a degree of macrobending. For this reason, a simpler method has been desired. In this paper, we propose a more intuitive fiber macrobending radius estimation method and report experimental results to verify the validity of the proposed method.
