A TCP Tunneling Method for Suppressing Duplicate TCP Retransmission by VM and vSwitch

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Multi-tenancy datacenters provide independent virtual networks for each tenant. An edge-overlay model constructs the virtual networks by connecting virtual switches using an IP tunneling technique. However, some tunneling protocols, such as VXLAN, have a performance problem. Stateless Transport Tunneling (STT) encapsulates VM packets by a pseudo TCP header and thereby achieves high performance communication using TCP Segementation Offload (TSO) feature provided by NICs. But, STT has poor compatibility with existing network devices because of modi edsemantics of TCP header. In this paper, we propose a new tunneling protocol named "Transparent Transport Tunneling (T3)" which encapsulates VM packets by authenticate TCP header and solves these problems. In addition, T3 can utilize Datacenter TCP (DCTCP) to suppress both physical and virtual traffic congestion. Results of our experiments showed that T3 achieved a high throughput of VM communication up to 10.7Gbps with offload features, while the maximum throughput of VXLAN was 3.4Gbps.
