In clinical treatment, an arteriovenous fistula is constructed in the forearm for effective dialysis therapy. To prevent the stenosis and occlusion of the fistula, its routine care is indispensable. We have developed a simple and noninvasive technique to obtain a transillumination image of the arteriovenous fistula utilizing the light scattered in the body tissue. In this study, we tried to estimate the inner diameter of blood vessel by improving the transillumination image with a point spread function and the brightness profile of the improved image. In the experiment with a model phantom of adult forearm, we could obtain good agreement between the given and the estimated diameters of blood vessel. Using the calibration curve obtained from a different model phantom, the estimation error was reduced from 66% to 2% for the blood vessel of 2 mm diameter. Through these analyses, the feasibility to realize the daily care of an arteriovenous fistula was verified. |
