TWDM (Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing)-PON is under standardization in ITU-T as 40 Gbit/s-class next generation passive optical networks (NG-PON2) for the high-speed optical access systems and the mobile communication base station. The optical receiver for TWDM-PON OLT is required the receiving performance that can realize the longer transmission distance and the larger number of ONUs, because the ONUs will be located over a wide area in the case of TWDM-PON. In this paper, we describe the 2.5 Gbit/s burst-mode receivers which we developed to have both a wide dynamic range of 31.5 dB and a fast receiver settling time of 24.1 ns by using a pre-amplifier with a unique bottom-detection automatic gain control (AGC) function. We demonstrated upstream burst-mode transmission with this burst-mode receiver and C-band ONU transmitters for TWDM-PON systems, and we confirmed the availability of 40 km transmission distance with 1:64 split and 20 km transmission distance with 1:256 split on a calculation. |
