In order to realize energy-efficient geofencing, which enables automatic detection of user’s entrance to POIs, it is required to reduce battery consumption while maintaining detection accuracy and delay. In this paper, with the aim of clarifying system performance under real environments, which is hard to model in rigorous fashion in computer simulation, we evaluate the proposed geofencing system implemented on Android-based smartphone through field tests. For the purpose of detailed analysis of the system, we compare hardware-component level battery consumption breakdown among different settings that covers every combination of geofencing component functions, such as movement detection, variable interval positioning, and positioning method switching. The evaluation results show that movement detection and variable interval positioning cause serious entrance detection delay when they are executed with sequential erroneous positioning results of WiFi-based positioning. It is also confirmed that false negative and false positive of movement detection can cause detection delay, because they block position measurements at appropriate timings. |
