| (in English) | Since we humans are concerned and aware of how we are perceived by others, we strategically adjust our behaviors so that they are viewed in a more positive light: reputation management. The present study investigated (1) whether 5- and 6-year-old children are already engaged in such behavior and (2) whether they are affected by a painting of eyes. In Experiment 1, the children did not selectively share more resources with an anonymous recipient when they were watched by another person and failed to show concern about their positive reputations. In Experiment 2, children tended to steal less when they were watched by others than when they were alone. Although a painting of eyes did not work as a cue for monitoring, our findings indicate that children care about their negative reputations and strategically manage their reputational impressions. We discussed children’s reputation management in light of awareness to eyes and cultural differences. | |
