The current generation of frequency offset estimators for satellite communications generally require significant frame averaging to achieve sufficient estimation performance particularly with the efficient short unique word (UW) lengths. However this requirement can be significantly reduced by distributing the UW symbols throughout the frame, and in this paper, we compare the offset estimation performances of the L&R and Fitz algorithms with application to a poly-polarization multiplexing (PPM) system. Although in general increasing the UW separation reduces the offset range, we demonstrate in this paper that the performance benefits from UW separation allow the correlation length to be reduced which compensates for this reduced offset range. By using these techniques, we show that the performance of the estimator with short UW length of 32 symbols is able to achieve the same performance as the estimator with long UW length 256 symbols assuming a 28 kHz offset. Finally, a technique to select an optimized value of the frame averaging size is described. |
