Development of analyzing technique on GPS and accelerometer data and its application to detecting hazards

(in English) Due to recent heath concerns and an eco-boom, people who commute by bicycle increase especially around urban areas. On the other hand, bicycle accidents increase too, including serious and fatal ones. This study relates to use of GPS and acceleration measuring applications on a smartphone to detect hazards on commuting roads. In order to measure the characteristics of the sensors, we carried out preliminary experiments in a less crowded bicycle road. We developed original hazard-detection methods based on the degree of accelerations and drive direction changes. We performed experiments to collect data on the public road with a large difference in height and blind crossings. The results show that the proposed algorithms successfully detects hazards.
