(in English) In Deep learning, which has recently seen its boom, it is still not clear how to optimize multi-layer structures. To solve this problem, it is important to analyze the role of each intermediate layer. In multimedia and/or sequential pattern recognition, it has become a critical issue how to unite the features of different modes and/or times. While input fusion or output fusion has been often used, a fusion in an intermediate stage should be more desirable. These two problems share the same key for their solutions: how to obtain effective intermediate representations. Here we review the recent studies for intermediate representations in speech recognition, speaker recognition, video recognition, and natural language processing, and predict their future direction.
