Identification of Mobile Applications via In-Network Machine Learning for Application Specific QoS Traffic Control

(in English) Due to the proliferation of smartphones and the explosive increase in mobile data traffic, application traffic identification becomes a necessity for improving the network utilization.
The existing research proposals have limitations such as costly generation of training data (e.g., large volume of traffic capture data), privacy violation caused by inspecting packet payloads via DPI, and difficulty of DPI due to encryption, thus, as a result, they end up with unreliable training data for classifying traffic. In this paper, we propose a method for generating reliable training data by adding an application identifier at the end of a TCP SYN packet. Our method avoids the reference of payload, thus is robust against the encryption of packet payload and free from privacy violation, and therefore increases the quality of training data. We evaluate our proposal analysing the real traffic captured at an MVNO and show our method successfully identifies mobile applications with about 80% credibility when the learning period is 5 days.
