Interactive software system for quantitative diagnosis using fundus photograph

(in English) Inspection using fundus photograph is paid attention to for early diagnosis the eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and excessive myopia, which are high in rank of cause of blindness, because it may identify a possible patient in the early stage. However, the task to detect the lesions in a fundus photograph imposes severe burden on an ophthalmologist, since it is conducted manually one by one. Furthermore, the diagnosis largely depends on the inspector’s decision and then tends to be subjective, since the diagnosis is not quantitative. In order to overcome the above difficulties, we developed an interactive software system to support the efficient and quantitative diagnosis of an ophthalmologist with fundus photographs, especially for ARMD and excessive myopia. The system semi-automatically detects the lesions using some image processing techniques, and then measures the feature quantities to be used for diagnosis. We evaluated the efficacy of the system by comparing the results by the system with those diagnosed by ophthalmologists.
