We propose a blood vessel extraction method from CT volumes. Organ extraction from medical images are an essential process of the computer-aided diagnosis and surgery. Because the blood vessels are related to most of organs, blood vessel extraction is necessary for the computer-aided diagnosis and surgery. Blood vessel extraction methods from medical images have been proposed by some research groups. Extraction methods using the multi-size line structure enhancement filter cause many false positives of various sizes. They require complexed false positive reduction processes. In this report, we propose a blood vessel extraction method from CT volumes utilizing the region growing method and the line structure enhancement filter. The region growing method effectively extracts thick blood vessels. The line structure enhancement filter accurately extracts thin blood vessels. In our method, the abdominal aorta is extracted by using the region growing method. Thin blood vessels that connects the extracted regions are extracted by using the line structure enhancement filter. The extraction and false positive reduction processes are applied for each extraction target size. The target size is changed in a stepwise fashion in an iterative process. Experimental results using four cases of artery phase CT volumes showed that our method can extract 87.6% and 84.3% of the blood vessels in precision and recall rates. |
