The Effect of High Frequency Z-direction Vibration and Magnetic Head Position on Hard Disk Drive Performance

(in English) It is well known that vibration of hard disk drives (HDDs) degrades HDD performance . To prevent this, various feedforward control systems for HDDs have been investigated. However, previous studies have addressed the vibration in the in-plane direction such as rotational vibration at frequencies lower than 1000 Hz. In this study, we measured the HDD transfer rate while shaking an HDD at frequencies up to 2000 Hz in the Z direction and found that the vibration in the Z direction at frequencies higher than 1000 Hz significantly degraded the performance of the HDD. We also paid attention that HDD performance degradation did not always occur under similar operating condition, and investigated the effect of the magnetic head position on HDD media.
