[Invited Talk] On Brain Functions for Musical Perception -- Overview and some recent results --
Iku Nemoto (TDU) MBE2014-128 NC2014-79
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Human auditory system is the most sophisticated of those of all the species, functioning as interface for speech communication. Music which probably started as a communication tool gave away the role to speech and then developed as art and entertainment. It can be written basically with notes having pitch and duration and brain functions handling its recognition and appreciation may appear simple to understand. However, even the most basic pitch recognition is not completely understood despite huge accumulation of results. The present report is intended not as a survey but as an introduction to the talk. I only hope that a topic or two will interest students in the musical brain.
