Use of DPI Technology for Network Congestion Control and Reduction of Power Consumption

(in English) Deep packet inspection (DPI) technology has conventionally been introduced for traffic monitoring, bandwidth control, access control of specific types of traffic, etc. By installing a DPI equipment at any arbitrary point in a network, rather than installing one DPI equipment for each server, it is possible to monitor communications of many servers.
In order to expand the application area of DPI technology, this paper explores the possibility of applying DPI technology to network traffic control and reduction of power consumption, and presents implementation examples of these applications. This paper first proposes a congestion control method, in which the DPI equipment estimates the CPU usage of each server by constantly monitoring the number of live TCP connections in each server, and moves some of virtual machines on congested servers to other servers through remote control real time. Next, this paper proposes a method to reduce power consumption in which the DPI equipment constantly monitors the traffic sent or received in each area which consists of several servers. If there is no traffic in an area other than the traffic used for monitoring for a certain period, the DPI equipment either puts the servers in this area to sleep mode or shuts down the servers through remote control. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed methods is demonstrated by an evaluation system with a real DPI equipment.
