Block-Size Adaptive Expanding Diamond Motion Search for H.265/HEVC

(in English) Recently, the moving image resolution is enhancing greatly, as 4K broadcasting has begun and 8K broadcasting trial is scheduled to start in 2016.
Therefore highly efficient motion estimation occupying the most processing complexity is required for smooth encoding PC enviroment which has become essential to utilize these high definition moving image.
TZSearch, being proposed under such circumstance, has established reputation for achieving both high detection accuracy and low computation complexity.
However it can not sufficiently meet the requirement of complexity reduction because it repeats an expanding diamond search that has many
remote sparse search points being effective to escape local optimul trap.
Therefore, this paper presents a new efficient motion estimation method based on periodically expanding diamond search that is able to effectively reduce remote search complexity of expanding diamond search.
In this method, the periodical expansion is adaptively controlled by the size and flatness of the search block so that ineffective remote search, or it's computation complexity are widely reduced.
As a result, this proposed method can reduce about 83% AD calculation and improve memory access efficiency by 36%.
